Forget the taco seasoning packets — this homemade version uses simple spices you already have and tastes infinitely better. The beef is juicy, deeply flavoured, and ready in 10 minutes. Set out toppings family-style and let everyone build their own. It's the kind of dinner everyone gets excited for.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. 1
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no pink remains, about 6–7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. 2
Add the diced onion and garlic to the cooked beef. Cook for 2 minutes until softened.
  3. 3
Add chili powder, cumin, paprika, onion powder, and salt. Stir well to coat the meat in spices. Cook for 1 minute — this toasts the spices and deepens the flavour.
  4. 4
Add the beef broth and stir. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until most of the liquid absorbs. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  5. 5
Warm tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat for 30 seconds per side (or wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for 45 seconds).
  6. 6
Serve the taco meat in warm tortillas, piled high with your favourite toppings. Squeeze lime juice over the top.
💡 Tip For maximum flavour, toast whole cumin seeds in the dry pan before grinding them for the recipe. Freshly ground spices make a noticeable difference.
